Samsung Galaxy Note 3 Review

And boy did they succeed. After overcoming the initial criticism and apprehension, the Note 1 managed to sell by the truckload. For people who thought this was the limit, the Note 2 rewrote history the following year and went on to sell 200 % more than the Note 1 did (as recently revealed by a top Samsung official) and convinced the market that phablets would be the future. The Note 2 attained the niche device status and went down in the annals of the smartphone industry as one of the best sellers of all time. Even as LG, HTC and Sony have either planned to come out or are out with their own offerings in the phablet market, Samsung is ready to take on the field of war with it’s latest horse- the Samsung Galaxy Note 3. And boy is it powerful. With enormous expectations resting firmly on the Note 3’s (able) shoulders, does the Note 3 deliver and live up to the hype? Let’s see.

Built around a brilliant 5.7” Super AMOLED Display of full HD resolution that drives an eye-popping 386 ppi, the Note 3 sports an Octa Core processor, four cores each of Cortex A7 and Cortex A15 clocked at 1.3 GHz and 1.9 GHz respectively that sits atop the new Exynos 5 5420, the successor to the Exynos 5410 that had a problem with its architecture which led to overheating and poor battery efficiency, a problem which experts and analysts say unfortunately cannot be fixed by any software whatsoever. We’ll come back to this later. An unprecedented 3GB of RAM takes care of all of the multi-tasking you imagine you would do on your Note 3. The Note 3’s photographic abilities are taken care of by a 13 MP shooter, very similar to the one found on the Galaxy S4 that shoots 1080p videos, though the Note 3 shoots 1080p at 60 fps. A 2MP front facing Camera takes care of your video calls and Skype and whatnot. At 168 grams, the Note 3 is 15gms lighter and 0.9mm thinner compared to its predecessor, the Note 2. To fit in almost twice as powerful hardware, a slightly bigger battery and powerful internals in a body actually lighter and significantly thinner than the predecessor is in itself an achievement – something we call engineering brilliance. The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 boots Android 4.3 out-of-box with Samsung Trademark skin Touchwiz sitting on top of it, bringing with it a host of exclusive smart features. At 151.2 x 79.2 x 8.3 mm and 168 gms, the Note 3 is one of the heavier handsets I have handled so far. It’s 15 gms lighter than its predecessor and the Nokia Lumia 920 as well. Considering the fact that it packs in 23 percent bigger display and 60 percent bigger battery and at the same time manages to stay lighter compared to the Lumia 920 speaks volumes about the amount of engineering gone into making it. Below the brilliant 5.7 inch display bordered by very thin bezels on sides lie trade mark Samsung keys – a physical Home Key at the center, a capacitive back key on the right and a capacity menu key on the left. Above the screen lies the ear speaker that adds to the overall oomph and it’s adorned on the right side by a sensor (probably for the smart features), front facing 2 MP Camera and an ambient light sensor. The metal ring that fits in all of the internals and connects the front and back panels has a Lock/Unlock Key on the upper-right side, a noise cancellation mic at the top alongside the 3.5mm jack, the volume rocker keys on the left and the new USB 3.0 Connector, a mic, stereo speaker and a slot for the S-Pen at the bottom. Samsung have finally (and thankfully) got rid of the glossy plastic treatment and given way to a faux-leather type finish treatment to the back panel. A wise and a really forward thinking step by Samsung, I must say. They have finally heard the loud clamor and got rid of the glossy finishing that I must confess everyone was getting bored of. Well, don’t get me wrong though. It’s still plastic. But they have finished and polished it in a way that it looks like faux leather. Only when you touch it, you know it’s plastic finished in the way it is. What about the stitches around the back panel? Well, that’s just a design on the panel. Nothing more, nothing less. It’s yet again the plastic that Samsung’s been criticized so much for, but Samsung’s approach to it this time around has been different and that makes quite some difference I must confess. You are much more confident when you hold the Phablet in your palm since it grips better because of the brilliant finish (and slimmer profile compared to the Note 2). It feels more solid as well. This is the best-built Samsung Flagship, I must say, compared to the likes of Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2 and more recently, the Galaxy S4. Yet again, phones like HTC One are still a lot better when it comes to build quality and premium finish. But for those who simply cannot live without Touchwiz or Sammy’s Battery Management skills, the Note 3 is a lease of fresh air. It’s, without doubt, the best looking Samsung phone currently in the market.


Well, with Specs sheet and build quality behind me, I can now concentrate on the more technical part, and the one that matters more- performance. Real time performance. Let me first write about handling. I consider handling of a phone as a part of performance since to operate anything, you’ve to basically handle the phone. Well, let me tell you, it’s one of the biggest phones I have handled. Not that I didn’t see this coming- I did. Coming from the Note 2, I knew I would have to persist with something big, something that’ll have to be jiggled in hand a lot of times to be able to operate with one-hand. Since I have bigger, almost grave-digging hands, I could manage it pretty easily. And the fact that I came from the Note 2 and the Note 3’s slimmer profile, better grip and lighter weight made things easier and helped me handle it seamlessly with one hand. But if you’re coming from normal phones like the S4, One or iPhone, you’re bound to have a few uncomfortable days with the Sammy Phablet. And if you have tiny hands, things will shape up even worse. All in all, a Phablet will always pose problems when you try to operate it with one hand. Note 3 makes things easier in general, but it still is a bit difficult to manage. It was anyway meant to pose these problems. So no surprises here.
Now for the real-life performance. The version I got, as I mentioned earlier, sports an Exynos Octa 5420. 3 GB RAM powers the Phablet and takes care of all of the multi-tasking you do on it. The phone boots Android 4.3 out of box, with an update to Android 4.4 planned sometime in the near future. Well, considering Sammy’s track record, I would suggest you take this with a healthy pinch of salt. The Note 2 and S3, in spite of being Sammy’s flagships not too long ago, are still stuck at Android 4.1. So realistically speaking, I’m not expecting Android 4.4 on the Note 3 anytime in the near future, at least not till early 2014. Anyway, let’s concentrate on how Note 3 works on the configuration it now has. Well, the whole of the OS feels smoother and better than even the Galaxy S4, which in fact was a lot smoother than the Note 2 and S3, though it came with its set of over-heating and stuttering problems. The Note 3 is a different story. It works flawlessly and switches between apps seamlessly. The whole of the OS feels a lot more polished and precise. The transitions are brilliant and the transition-to-transition journey is buttery smooth. During my day-to-day use, it never lagged, froze or stuttered. Apps and games opened quicker than I imagined they would and the 3 gig of RAM took care of all of the multi-tasking I usually do and handled it flawlessly me. Web browsing was a charm. Even the heaviest of web pages never posed any problems for the phablet. Trust me, I’m a heavy phone user, and I really stretched the limits at a few instances to try and beat the Note 3’s abilities. But it never gave up. It handled anything and everything I threw at it pretty comfortably and came out with flying colors. It’s a beast, trust me. With the Airtel 3G connection I have with my Bill Plan, the internet connection on the Note 3 doesn’t just run, it literally screams. The reception quality in general was outstanding. At places where I could get no network with the Note 2 or S4, I got a bar of network with the Note 3 enough to make good quality phone calls or send instant messages. The Antennas are well placed and are of better quality in general, I reckon.

Does Exynos Octa 5420 address the issues people faced with Exynos Octa 5410?

This one’s for the power users. The Exynos Octas are built around the A7 and the A15 architectures. The A15 is the more powerful of the two and generally handles heavier tasks whereas the A7 handles the usual light phone applications in a bid to consume lower amount of power and therefore improve battery life. Samsung says the chipset is smart enough to switch between A7 and A15 depending upon what resources the specific app demands. This is how it works (or is supposed to work) – The A7, the less powerful of the two and more battery efficient, activates a couple of cores and handles whatever activity the user subjects the chipset to. And if the chipset needs more power to handle that activity, it automatically activates two A15 Cores, the more powerful and less efficient, so that the activity is handled seamlessly, since if A7 cores are activated and are proved insufficient to handle that activity, it’ll freeze or hang the OS. A brilliant idea. Two A7 and two A15 cores are a perfect combination to handle day-to-day activities on your phone which includes making phone calls, opening and sending texts and IMs , browsing on lighter web pages as well as opening and sending Emails. Now, for more power-demanding apps like heavy 3D games or heavy apps or even for heavy multitasking, two cores each of A7 and A15 start gasping for air and demand another two cores off the A7 to handle it. There are many apps that can be handled by two cores each of the A7 and A15, and then there are quite a few apps, heavy multitasking and richer web pages that need the addition of two more cores of A7. Practically speaking, there’s no app or no Web page or no amount of multitasking that’ll need all eight cores working simultaneously or even four cores of A15 along with the two cores of A7 that are automatically activated when the activity commenced. Now here lies the S4’s problem, the one that comes with Exynos Octa 5410. After two cores each of A7 and A15 are activated, should the activity demand more, the Chipset should activate two more cores of A7 which should be sufficient to handle any app or any level of multi-tasking and at the same time should save the battery life. But because of a hardware problem in the design of the chipset, it fails to switch back to the A7 and goes on to activate the battery-eating cores of the A15, which, in the context of the activity, is absolutely unnecessary and needless. This wastes a lot of power that could have been saved by the A7 and would have been sufficient to handle anything seamlessly. This problem drastically affects the S4’s battery life and even spells issues like overheating and stuttering, since the extra power of the A15 cannot be handled by the RAM and the OS since the RAM and the OS basically were built to function with the Chipset in a way the Chipset is originally meant to function. Worse, this problem cannot be fixed by software updates. And Sammy never tried to do it too. So when I first booted the Note 3 version that has been shipped here with the Exynos 5420, I was a bit apprehensive about how it would work considering how the 5410 on S4 posed us so many problems. Samsung, in a press release a few months back, went on to state that the Exynos 5420 will go on to address this issue. Well, I can safely say that Samsung has indeed fixed the issue and the Chipset now functions the way it’s supposed to. First A7, then A15 and if need be, switch back to A7. This ensures incredible battery life and the overheating and stuttering issues that were a part of the S4’s story too are gone now. I can safely rule out any problems whatsoever.

Display- An actual improvement over the Note 2?

One of the aspects on the Note 3 specs sheet that really got me excited is the 5.7” Super AMOLED Display of Full HD Resolution. The S4’s 1080p panel was a huge improvement over the Note 2’s and S3’s display in terms of vibrance, color correction and most importantly, the sunlight legibility. Traditionally, Amoled’s have never been on good terms with sunlight legibility and brightness. The brightness issue is even more prominent while in webpages. While the Black levels are astonishingly good, the whites are too dull and it really hampers the experience to a level where it starts becoming irritating. With the S4, Samsung, the most prominent exponents of the Amoled panels, addressed these issues upto a certain level, only to be overshadowed by the HTC One’s stupendous SuperClear LCD Panel. With the Note 3, though, Samsung have improved by leaps and bounds in terms of color correction, brightness and sunlight legibility. White levels are a lot better now. The display in brilliantly bright and dare I say the sunlight legibility matches that of the iPhone 5 which arguably has the best LCD in terms of sunlight legibility. Yes, the Amoled still shows larger-than-life and fake colors, something photophiles won’t appreciate. Sometimes, these colors even make a few images look cartoony. But this is how Amoled’s have been, traditionally. It has its own advantages and comes with its set of disadvantages. But Sammy has tried improving the panel on the Note 3 where it matters, and as far as my opinion is concerned, it works. This is by far the best Amoled panel ever built on a phone.

Touchwiz- How improved is it?

Touchwiz is Sammy’s custom launcher packed along with Android. It has been sitting there comfortably since Samsung made their first ever Android, and with every addition, it has become smoother and better and added functionalities and changed a few things to make life easier. How good is the Touchwiz on the Note 3 compared to the Note 2 and S4. It’s a mixed bag, to be frank. It’s almost exactly identical to the Touchwiz on the S4, but there are quite a few changes if compared with the Note 2. Widgets have changed, some have been added while other few have been taken away. The Notification area is better now, with even more toggles available now. Coming back to the widgets, Sammy picked every widget and polished it. I loved the new Assistive Light widget, which is now in a 1x1 format and hence eats up as much amount of space as a single app would on the home screen. This is a very small but a very useful improvement over the Assistive Light Widget on the S4 or Note 2 which used to be 4x2. This actually made no sense. I’m happy Sammy finally fixed it, though I wonder what took them so much of time to do it. On the flip side, the Favorite Setting Widget is now gone, something I miss dearly since I used to have a Battery Setting on my homescreen. Again, this doesn’t make any sense, though this hardly matters in real time. Coming to the functionality, the Contact Search in the Dialpad is a huge step backward. When I used to search a contact on my Note 2, I had the liberty to input the first name on the dialpad, and if at all I had to filter the search further by inputting middle or last name, I could simply use the (*) button on the dialpad to insert a space and start inputting the middle or last name. Sadly, and nonsensically, this option is missing in the new Touchwiz since the S4. The Contact Search on the Touchwiz has traditionally never been a smart learner. Never has it displayed the most frequently used contacts first. And with this new flaw, an already mediocre experience on the dialpad goes a step backward. And boy is it irritating! So much that I have finally opted to go for the Rocket Dialer on the Play Store. The HTC Sense’s dialer is the best I have come across and hope Sammy takes a cue from HTC in this regard.

Everything else on the new Touchwiz is smoother and more polished. But a few glitches in the core functionality prompts me to call this new Touchwiz a mixed bag.


Frankly speaking, there’s not a lot to write about the Camera. It’s almost the same as the one we were dished out with the S4 – 13 Megapixels. It captures decent daylight images, excellent low-light images and magnificent Full HD Videos with brilliant audio quality. The Note 3 was never meant to woo cameraphiles. That job is better left to Nokia Lumia 1020 which promises to pack a serious punch with its shooting abilities. For people though, average users like me whose photography is confined to social networking and casual storing, the Note 3 is a lovely camera to carry. It does everything people like me would want it to do and does it in style. It’s a bit on the slower side, though, compared to the one on the iPhone 5. Quality wise, though, it’ll probably outdo the iPhone 5.

The New S-Pen:

If not for anything else, competitors must credit Samsung’s phablets for reviving the Stylus. While the world happily bid Stylus adieu with Apple’s iPhone, Sammy has done an extravagant job by reviving Stylus and actually making it useful. S-Pen on the Note and Note 2 integrated wonderfully well with the OS and added a lot of utility to the overall experience and the Note 3 takes it to an altogether different level. While the smart features like air view and air control are more of marketing gimmicks than being actually useful, the S-Pen breathes fresh air in the overall experience. The S-Pen on the Note 3 is symmetrical. Now you don’t have to worry about the orientation while you put it back in into its slot. A well-thought and well-executed thing indeed. Removing the S-Pen from its slot gives you the options of toggling quick Note on or off. It’s very handy to take down quick notes while you are in the middle of a phone call or a Chat or anything else. It’s very responsive and very accurate at the same time.
With the Trademark button on the S-Pen pressed down, hovering the S-Pen over the screen opens up a Clock-like new menu, something Sammy calls revolutionary which, upto a certain degree, it actually is. First of the five options that appear in the menu is Action Memo, which is basically a beefed up option of the quick note. It’s a big improvement over the Note 2 by the way. Now it recognizes your handwriting. So whatever you note down, be it an email ID or a phone number, you can open it through the respective application as the Note 3 reads your handwriting and transforms it in the context of the application opened. Next, the scrapbooker is essentially useful to cut your media using the stylus for future reference. Third is the screenwrite. It captures your screen and makes it available then and there to be edited and shared. Not that such menu was not available on the Note 2. It was, but you had to pass through three or four screens before such option came up. Fourth is S-Finder which essentially is a spotlight search app. There’s an easier way to activate it though, and I will anyday prefer it to activate it rather than take the Stylus out. Fifth one is the Pen Window, which, I must acknowledge is extremely useful. It opens a small window of the app you select which can be moved anywhere across the screen and can be minimized to stay in the form of a bubble-shaped option. It overrides everything on the screen, even Widgets and can be accessed using one touch. One of the most useful aspects of it is that you can open multiple, upto four pen windows. So when you are in the middle of your accounts file, you can keep the calculator app handy in a corner. Need it? Just tap it and access it. One click and it can be easily minimized to stay where you want it to stay. Easy and simple but very useful. Features like this make the S-Pen a joy to use with the Note 3.

Call clarity and Loudspeaker:
If my reading is to be believed, call clarity on the Note series has never been as good as it has been on the ‘S’ series, and Note 3 is no exception. While the S4 had excellent call clarity, the Note 3 was just above average to be frank. Things got worse with loudspeaker on as the person at other end barely heard me as I tried talking from a longer distance and changed angles. This is nowhere close to the call quality of the iPhone 5 or the now age-old BlackBerries. It’s decent enough though, and in real time does the job for your pretty easily and decently.


Android devices have always been certified as battery guzzling devices and seldom have Android phones shared a harmonious relationship with Battery Efficiency. So how does the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 N900 shape up in terms of battery efficiency?
Here comes the answer to the ‘B’ question. As we saw, the Note 3 is one beast of a smartphone and roars power in every bit of what you do with it. The question though is, with all this functionality and features, how long will it last with the new Octa Core version? Things are certainly pleasant in this regard, and I was surprised I must confess since I never thought the Note 3 would outdo the Note 2 with only a 100 mAH bump in the Battery size while having a bigger full HD and a faster processor equipped with 3GB RAM to feed. And it outdoes the Note 2 with quite some margin, by the way, around 20 percent to be precise. Five day figures, all time on 3G, fetched me an average screentime of 4 hours 25 minutes, voice calling around 1 hour 22 minutes between charges, and the average time on battery was around 12 hours 20 minutes.
Let me breakdown the figures to give you a precise idea about the battery life.
The 4 hours 25 minutes of average screentime consisted of around 25 minutes of browsing, an hour of Facebook, TOI, Emails, SMS messaging, Viber, Skype and Wechat, a whole hour of Whatsapp messaging (reading and typing), an hour of gaming (Stick Cricket Premier League and Fun Run) and an hour or so of media and casual use. Voice calls included a lot of short voice calls which take more toll on the battery since the network is accessed as many times to receive, make or cut calls.
There would be times when I was on Viber, making a voice call, or a Skype video call too. Those would not be for more than 20 minutes though. Browsing would mostly consist of heavier websites with a lot of HD quality images to load. Compared to the Note 2, this is almost 20 percent better and that does mean a lot to power users like me. I stand up and salute the guys at Samsung for the kind of optimization that has went into the software. A bright example of what software can do to battery life.


As I write the conclusive words, I stare at the Note 3 lying on the table. Is it one of the best Android phones ever made, in general? It has to be. It packs all the smart features the S4 packed, has a better display, a better (and the biggest improvement of all) processor, more RAM for seamless multi-tasking, a better Camera and a brilliant S-Pen and whatnot.
Is it a smart upgrade over the Note 2? Yes, it absolutely is. It conveniently outdoes the Note 2 in almost every way, feels a lot better, looks a lot better and performs a lot better. Along with all the bells and chimes flagships pack, it also fits in a few revolutionary features and takes utility to an altogether different level.
Should you upgrade to the Note 3 from Note 2?
Well, if you’re a power user, just go for it. It’s priced somewhat exorbitantly at Rs.46,000. But it’s worth the price tag for power users like me.
If you are not a power user and don’t love exploring every detail from every corner of your phone, then you might as well stay on the Note 2 – That’s because the Note 2 will sell at Rs.20,000 max as a second hand handset. And for a regular user whose use is confined to making calls and composing messages, Rs. 26,000 for a better technology that’ll most probably go unused is absolutely needless.
If you come from an S4 or any other Android phone, you might as well handle one of the live demos available at a store near you to get an idea of the size of the phablet and then make the plunge.
Will it be a good upgrade over the iPhone? Well, first it largely depends on how invested you are in the iOS and how you use your device. Android brings with it a lot of utility, no doubt. But if you are invested in the Apple ecosystem and are into clouding, this might as well hurt you after the switch. Another point of concern will be the screen size. A tiny 4” iPhone 5 or an even tinier 3.5” iPhone 4 or iPhone 4s to the humongous 5.7” Note 3 might pose a few challenges and might as well be a deal breaker. Again, I will recommend a hands on after you make up your mind to move to Android and zero in on the Note 3.
With Rs.46,000, you can buy almost every phone there’s to buy in an already over-flooded market barring the exception of HTC Butterfly S, which has crossed the limits with a pocket-burning Rs.54,000. If you are ready to spend though, the Note 3 is the phone for you. It is every bit the phone that you’ve been dreaming of. And more. And more. It’s business as usual at Samsung.

No More Google Page Rank update this year 2013 : Matt Cutt

Google’s head for SEO, Matt Cutts, said on Twitter yesterday that Google won’t be releasing a new Google Toolbar PageRank update this year. Niels Bosch asked on Twitter if we should expect an update to PageRank before 2014. In response to that, Matt Cutts said, “I would be surprised if that happened.” It has now been 8 months since the last Google Toolbar PageRank update. In fact, the last update was on February 4, 2013 and I personally think PageRank is no more – at least the Toolbar PageRank.
I’d be surprised if there will be another Toolbar PageRank update ever. Maybe Google will do one next year. Here is Matt’s response from yesterday:
